  • on the 3d scan data:

    • vehicle spec: Ford Focus RS Mk3 (MY 2017), respectively its front bumper in mounted condition

    • data format: STL, containing a mesh with approx. 4 million nodes ⠀

    • file size: approx. 197MB (unzipped) / approx. 120MB as download (zipped)
  • what you could do with it:

    • having a try: for everyone that has never worked with a 3d scan and wants to start out

    • engineering/design: plenty ideas to start with
    1. side flaps/canards
    2. front lip
    3. air vents w/o fog lights
    4. brake ducts
    5. fresh air intake (engine)

    • 3d printing: the master class of working with 3d scans... requires reverse engineering by either mesh rework or surface modeli
  • what you need to start:

    • a powerful PC
    • CAD software

Pro tip: Fusion 360 by Autodesk offers free licenses for private users.

Quick start guide for Fusion 360:

    1. create a new component inside a file

    2. import mesh into the component

    3. create a reasonable reference plane by 'direct mesh edit' function

    4. use this reference plane for a 'mesh section sketch'

    5. amend additional references (coordinate origin and orthogonal plane) inside the mesh section sketch

    6. align the component to the coordinate system of the file using the created references

    7. freeze the position of the component using the 'pin' function

Once this is completed the actual engineering work can begin.
